
Azov is one of the oldest cities in Russia. It is known that in its vicinity and directly on the place where the modern city stands, there were settlements of people more than two thousand years ago. There lived peoples who disappeared without a trace along with their language and culture: Cimmerians, Meots, Scythians, Sauromats, Khazars, Polovtsy. Here in the era of the Ancient World was the ancient city of Tanais (colony of the Bosporan Kingdom), in subsequent eras – the city of the Golden Horde called Azak-Tana; the Genoese trading post-fortress; then – the fortified citadel of the Ottoman Empire. In the XVII-XVIII centuries, the city repeatedly changed hands: Russia tried to dislodge the Turks from here and ruin this stronghold of devastating raids and the slave trade. The most famous and significant are two episodes. Azov siege seat: in 1637, the Cossacks recaptured Azov from the Turks and held it for five years, repelling periodic invasions of the enemy. The young Peter I and his army took the Azov fortress in 1696 and held it for Russia until 1711. The city became part of Russia forever in 1769, after its occupation during the next Russian-Turkish war.
